CARDIAC SURGERY ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT (CALS)

  • Cardiac Surgery Advanced Life Support (CALS) is a set of protocols devised to address the unique set of challenges in post cardiac surgical patients suffering a cardiac arrest and all common serious complications in ICU or on the ward.
  • The European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (EACTS) accepted CALS as its official resuscitation protocol in 2009.
  • The protocol was subsequenetly endorsed by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR).
  • The Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) in its Expert Consensus Statement sets these protocols as the standard of care in USA.
  • Our aim is to create a common language for all cardiothoracic practitioners.
  • CALS training is offered through e-learning and taught courses.
  • We hope our courses will empower all pracitioners to act with confidence in treating critically ill patients post cardiac surgery using well validated protocols, safely managing the patient until expert help arrives.
